With a population
of almost 100,000 people, Darlington is a large town in North East
England. Darlington is located in the county of Durham and is part
of the Tees Valley.
The town is conveniently located as a gateway to North East England
and has a major railway station that operates on the East Coast Main
Line.
Historically, Darlington is known for its railway links and is home
to the popular Darlington Railway Centre and Museum. The museum is
located on the original 1825 Stockton and Darlington Railway route.
This railway line famously played host to the world's first
passenger rail journey that took place between the towns of Shildon
and Stockton-on-Tees.
Darlington's Civic Theatre is a renowned venue for arts, musicals,
dramas and plays. Other cultural buildings in Darlington include the
Arts Centre, and the Forum Music Centre (which regularly hosts live
music and comedy). Darlington also plays host to the Darlington Dog
Show.
South Park is a beautiful 94 acre park that has recently undergone a
3.9 million pound restoration. The restoration project was funded by
the Heritage Lottery Fund and is a popular recreational area and
attracts many people every year.
The park has a large lake that is home to ducks, swans and geese.
There are also sports facilities, an aviary and many well kept open
spaces.
Darlington have several sporting teams including Darlington F.C. (a
football team who play in the Football League Two), Darlington Rugby
Team and Darlington Cricket Club.
The Dolphin Centre in Darlington is the premier leisure venue in the
region. The centre underwent a refurbishment in 2006 at a cost of
five million pounds.
For the more adventurous minded, Darlington also offers a range of
centres providing sports such as sky diving, motor racing,
paint-balling and quad biking activities.
The A1 road handles most traffic to and from Darlington. The road
used to run straight through the centre of the town but is now
diverted to the west. "Arriva North-East" operate the main bus
transport in Darlington. By air, the Durham Tees Valley Airport is
the closest airport to Darlington.
