Dublin North is a
large constituency with an electoral roll of over 70,000 people.
Located in the north of County Dublin, the constituency is
represented in Dáil Éireann (a house of the Irish Parliament).
Originally, the constituency was created by the 1980 Electoral Act.
This replaced the previous constituency of North County Dublin. The
Dublin North constituency includes several regions including Rush,
Lusk, Skerries and Donabate. Balbriggan and Malahide are electoral
areas of Fingal County Council.
Dublin is situated in the province of Leinster (on the east coast of
Ireland) at the mouth of the River Liffey. Originally a Viking
settlement, Dublin has been the principal city for Ireland ever
since the medieval era. In modern times, Dublin one of Europe's
fastest increasing populations.
Dublin has a rich and vibrant history and has many famous and
inspirational literary figures. George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Becket,
Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker are some of the most famous examples.
Dublin has also produced more Nobel Prize for Literature winners
than any other city in the world (three in total).
James Joyce produced some of his most famous works including
"Dubliners" which is a anthology of short stories based around local
residents of Dublin the the early 20th century. "Ulysses", arguably
his most celebrated work, is also set in Dublin.
Dublin has a pulsating nightlife and was voted friendliest city in
Europe. There are many pubs across the whole of the city centre and
the St Stephen's Green area is home to most of the popular
nightclubs. Wexford Street, Harcourt Street and Camden Street are
three of the most popular areas for pubs and clubs.
The Temple Bar area (to the south of the Liffey) is a popular
tourist area and has become popular for hen parties and stag nights
in recent years. Some locals steer clear of this area but others
embrace it and the area has become known as a cultural district with
many small music venues and street performers.
Shopping in Dublin is popular for locals and tourists. Several
sections of the city are devoted to shopping including Stephen's
Green Shopping Centre, Ilac Shopping Centre, Jervis Shopping Centre
and the Grafton and Henry Streets. Many large department stores,
including Debenhams, have plots in the city and the area has long
been a meeting point for locals.
A new planned development, the Northern Quarter, has been given the
green light and will see nearly 50 new shops, a four star hotel and
175 apartments developed in the city centre. Several new cafes are
also planned for the work that is due to start work in late 2008.
Transport links to Dublin are excellent due to the city being the
main hub of the Ireland road network. The busiest road in Ireland,
the M50, runs around the city with several smaller inner and outer
orbital routes.
By sea and air, Dublin can be travelled to via Dublin Port (the
country's busiest port and Dublin Airport. The airport is the 14th
busiest airport in Europe and over 20 million people use it every
year.
