Ely, in Cambridgeshire, is a small cathedral city with a population of just over 15,000 people. Ely is just 14 miles from Cambridge and is the third smallest city in England. Ely is well known for its beautiful historic buildings and winding shopping streets.

Situated on the River Great Ouse, the University of Cambridge use the area to train for the yearly Boat Race. The river was even used for the race itself 1944 and saw Oxford victorious.

The most spectacular, and well known, landmark in Ely is the Cathedral. Known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, its tower can be seen from miles around.

Construction of the cathedral started in the early 11th century under the guidance of King William I and was finally completed in the middle of the 14th century.

Past notable residents of Ely include Oliver Cromwell who lived in the city for a number of years while he was a local tax collector. His old house is today used as a museum and is home to the Tourist Information Office.

Ely Community College is the main secondary school in the area with over 1,000 pupils. The college is in the early stages of being integrated as a Business and Enterprise College.

Despite the small size of the city, Ely has its own football team that play in the Eastern Counties Football League Division One. Ely City F.C. play their home games near Ely Cathedral at the Unwin Sports Ground. Ely City F.C. began in 1885 and in the 1997-1998 season made it to the FA Vase 3rd round.

Transport to Ely is mainly via road or train. Ely Railway Station is a busy station on the Fen Line and serves trains from four operators. The station underwent major developments in the 1990's to cope with the increasing demand for the service.
