Glasgow South is
a parliamentary constituency based in Glasgow, Scotland's largest
city. One Member of Parliament is elected based on the first past
the post election system.
The Glasgow South area is just one out of a total of seven Glasgow
based constituencies. This system was introduced in 2005
(previously, ten areas were included). Glasgow South was originally
represented by Glasgow Cathcart and other smaller areas.
The climate in Glasgow is not in keeping with typical Scottish
weather. Due to the mild south westerly location, the Gulf Stream
warms the city as it travels up the Clyde.
Glasgow is also well covered by the Clyde Valley the keeps the city
quite muggy on occasions. It is quite common for the Glaswegian
weather to change quickly from hot and sunny to a rain storm in the
space of a few hours.
Much like many American cities, Glasgow's city centre streets are
laid out on a grid based system. Many of the public statues and the
complex Victorian Glasgow City Chambers are based in George Square,
the city's main centre.
There are two main shopping centres in Glasgow, the St Enoch Centre
and the Buchanan Galleries. In Prices Square there are several high
class designer label retailers.
The south of Glasgow is the biggest are of the city. Several other
smaller districts in the area are Shawlands, Cardonald, Mount
Florida, the Gorbals, Mosspoark, Goven, Arden, Ibrox, Cessnock,
Busby, East Kilbride, Newton Mearns and Deaconsbank.
The Pacific Quay site (that used to be docklands) is the location of
the popular Glasgow Science Centre. The BBC have their Scottish
headquarters in the same area due to the excellent digital media
connections in the area.
The south of Glasgow has several popular public buildings. Scotland
Street School Museum, House for an Art Lover, Pollock Country Park
and the Burrell Collection all reside here. Hampden Park, the
National Football Stadium of Scotland and Ibrox Stadium, home of
Rangers Football Club can also be found in this area.
Located on the bank of the River Clyde, Govan is an area with a
great engineering and shipbuilding history. The Southern General
Hospital and the main Glasgow Subway depot are also on site.
Glasgow has the most widespread urban rail network in the United
Kingdom (outside of London) with trains running to many parts of the
west of Scotland. Queen Street Station and Central Station provide
train links to most of the rest of the United Kingdom.
Glasgow has two international airports. Glasgow International (in
Paisley) is just 8 miles outside the city and Glasgow Prestwick
International Airport is approximately 20 miles outside the city.
