Gloucester Local Business Directory

Gloucester, near the Welsh border, is a large city with a population of over 120,000 people (with up to 136,000 including the out area). Set in the county of Gloucestershire, the city is on the River Severn and is on the doorstep of the Cotswolds. Other areas of natural beauty include the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills which are also on the edge of the city.

Historically, Gloucester was used as a port on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. The whole area (including the wharfs and warehouses) where renovated in the 1980's. The buildings are today mainly used for residential apartments and flats, shops and bars.

The most famous landmark in Gloucester is the stunning Gloucester Cathedral. Located towards the north of the city, the Cathedral dates back over 1000 years. Kind Edward II is buried at the Cathedral and the landmark has achieved notoriety in recent years for being used for several scenes in the Harry Potter films.

In addition to the Cathedral, Gloucester has many other fine examples of medieval and Tudor buildings and houses. The main town hall (which stands in the middle of the city) was replaced at the end of the 19th century but the New Inn (in Northgate Street) still stands.

Several churches can be found in Gloucester including the St Mary de Crypt, St Mary de Lode, St Nicholas Church and the St Michael Church. The latter is believed to have once been connected with the St Peter ancient abbey.

Oliver Cromwell's famous quote "as sure as God's in Gloucester" is believed to refer to the amount of churches and chapels that were in Gloucester at the time.

Several Roman remains were found in the 1970's when construction work of a new store began. Located at the end of Eastgate Street, the remains can now be seen through a glass case. The location also has a brief history and more information about ancient Gloucester.

In addition to the canal links, Gloucester is accessible via many different transport methods. Public transport is provided in the city centre to numerous local destinations.

By rail, Gloucester can be reached by the Gloucester Railway Station. The station operates on the main Bristol to Birmingham line and, at over 600 metres, has the record for having the longest platform in the country.
