Hartlepool, in North East England has a population of nearly 90,000 people. Hartlepool is a sea port in County Durham that, historically, was an important market town in the Middle Ages that has developed rapidly over the years.

In the 19th century, Hartlepool was an outlet for the South Durham coalfields and saw coal exported by rail from the town. During the 1930's Great Depression Hartlepool suffered from high unemployment rates.

Ironically, the Second World War alleviated this when the towns shipbuilding and steel-making industries enjoyed a revival.

After the Second World War the retail industry become the leading industry in the town with the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre (opened by Princess Anne) the forefront retail building. Today, the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is the third largest shopping centre in the north east of England.

Many of the original stores still have retail space in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre along with nearly 150 other shops. There is ample spacing for over 1000 cars and the centre is still the central retail hub for Hartlepool.

Hartlepool have secured the lucrative contract to host the 2010 Tall Ships Race. Over 100 tall ships will be greeted in the port.
Hartlepool has always had good tall ship links, over 40 ships visited the port in 2005 prior to the towns bid for the 2010 race.

There are good road, rail and bus transport links to Hartlepool. By road, the A689 and A179 are the primary routes into the town from Sunderland, Durhan, Stockton and Middlesbrough.

By rail, Hartlepool Railway Station operates on the Durham Coast Line. National Rail provide regular trains to Middlesbrough and Newcastle and there is a new Sunderland to London service which passes through Hartlepool.
