Hartlepool, in
North East England has a population of nearly 90,000 people.
Hartlepool is a sea port in County Durham that, historically, was an
important market town in the Middle Ages that has developed rapidly
over the years.
In the 19th century, Hartlepool was an outlet for the South Durham
coalfields and saw coal exported by rail from the town. During the
1930's Great Depression Hartlepool suffered from high unemployment
rates.
Ironically, the Second World War alleviated this when the towns
shipbuilding and steel-making industries enjoyed a revival.
After the Second World War the retail industry become the leading
industry in the town with the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre
(opened by Princess Anne) the forefront retail building. Today, the
Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is the third largest shopping
centre in the north east of England.
Many of the original stores still have retail space in Middleton
Grange Shopping Centre along with nearly 150 other shops. There is
ample spacing for over 1000 cars and the centre is still the central
retail hub for Hartlepool.
Hartlepool have secured the lucrative contract to host the 2010 Tall
Ships Race. Over 100 tall ships will be greeted in the port.
Hartlepool has always had good tall ship links, over 40 ships
visited the port in 2005 prior to the towns bid for the 2010 race.
There are good road, rail and bus transport links to Hartlepool. By
road, the A689 and A179 are the primary routes into the town from
Sunderland, Durhan, Stockton and Middlesbrough.
By rail, Hartlepool Railway Station operates on the Durham Coast
Line. National Rail provide regular trains to Middlesbrough and
Newcastle and there is a new Sunderland to London service which
passes through Hartlepool.
