Haverhill Local Business Directory

Haverhill is a small market town with a population of just over 20,000 people. Located in the county of Suffolk the town is traditionally known as an industrial town and is based at the foot of the Newmarket Ridge chalk hills.

Haverhill has developed rapidly over the last couple of decades and now includes Hanchet End (a small hamlet) and the surrounding countryside land.

Like many other market towns in England, Haverhill still has a thriving market held on a weekly basis. This is normally held every Saturday in the main market square. A smaller scale market is often held on Fridays in the same location.

Much of Haverhill's economy still thrives on the industrial sector of the south side of the town. Many significant manufacturing companies have their bases in the area including Grampian Foods and International Flavours and Fragrances.

One of the largest companies in the area is the Genzyme Biotechnology site. This was a quarter of a century ago in the area and supplies pharmaceuticals worldwide.

Haverhill has a large leisure centre and swimming pool and a full eighteen hole golf course. There are also many sports and clubs for activities such as snooker, ten pin bowling and gymnastics.

The Haverhill Arts Centre is a well kept grade II listed building that is housed inside the Town Hall and covers a variety of events. There are also several large scale future developments planned for the town including a multiplex cinema.

Transport links to Haverhill usually involve the A1307 road. This connects the town to Cambridge. The road can be quite congested at peak times as it is popular with commuters. To help alleviate this there are several regular bus services around the town that operate inside Haverhill and out to some of the adjoining villages.

There is no railway station in Haverhill and no airport. The nearest airport is London Stansted Airport which is only 30 miles away. London Stansted Airport is a large, single runway, airport operating flights internationally.

London Stansted Airport benefits from many flights being operated by budget low-cost European airlines making it very busy at times. Cambridge City Airport is also close by but does not offer as much choice for flights.
