Islington Local Business Directory

Islington is a central London borough with nearly 190,000 residents.
Originally formed in 1965, Islington is made up of the old metropolitan boroughs of Finsbury and Islington.

Towards to north of Islington is the Highbury and Islington station and the main high street, Upper Street. Chapel Market was once considered to be part of Pentonville but is now more popularly associated with the Islington borough.

Islington had significant damage during World War II with over 3,000 houses destroyed. This, and other parts of the borough, saw significant redevelopment after the war with new buildings and houses being quickly constructed.

In recent years many of the original 17th century inns have now been replace with modern wine bars and new buildings.

There are two universities in Islington, the City University in Northampton Square and the London Metropolitan University on Holloway Road. Both universities have well over 20,000 students and are very popular.

The City University in particular is well known for having a superb ratio of graduates to employment and can date its history back to the end of the 19th century.

Islington is home to many Grade II listed buildings including Terrett's Place, St Paul's Church, Islington Town Hall, St Mary's Church and The Union Chapel.

Several famous names reside in the borough including Lily Allen, Clive Anderson, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, Joe Cole, Nick Hornby, Tony Hadley, Neve Campbell, singer Dido and musician David Gray.

Islington has an inner city farm (like many of London's boroughs) called Freightliners City Farm. The farm, which is free for the public to view, has several animals (rather than being an industrial based farm).
