Leicester is a large city in the county of Leicestershire with a
population approaching 300,000. Located in the East Midlands,
Leicester lies on the River Soar and is near the the English National Forest (with over 200 square miles of forestry).

Leicester has a central urban area with several satellite towns around the main city including Wigston, Birstall, Syston, Oadby and Leicester Forest East. Technically, Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands in terms of population and area.

Leicester has a wide range of industries that help contribute to the city's economy. Engineering, knitwear, printing, plastics and electronics are some of the key industries in the area.

Right in the middle of Leicester is the famous Clock Tower that divides Leicester in to five main routes in and out of the city; High Street, Humberstone Gate, Belgrave Gate, Churchgate and Gallowtree Gate.

There are two main shopping centres in Leicester, the Shires (which is going to be renamed to Highcross Leicester soon) and the Haymarket Shopping Centre. Another popular shopping area in the city is the famous Leicester Market. The market is regarded as Europe's largest covered market.

There are two universities in Leicester, the University of Leicester
and De Montford University. Both universities have a large number of students (approximately 16,000 for the University of Leicester and over 22,000 for De Montford University).

Leicester has an extensive rail network that will soon grow even more when Eurostar begin their services to London St Pancras. This will effectively give Leicester a direct line to many European destinations.

By road, the M1 motorway connects to Leicester on Junction 21 but visitors should be aware this is one of the busiest sections of motorway in the United Kingdom.

The East Midlands Airport is based in North West Leicestershire and operates low-cost budget airlines that travel to many European dest
inations like Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and Frankfurt. There are also several domestic flights and some to America.
