Newcastle Upon Tyne Local Business Directory

Newcastle Upon Tyne is a large city in Tyne and Wear with a population of well over 250,000 people. Newcastle is situated on the famous River Tyne, a 60 mile stretch of water that forms from the North Tyne and South Tyne rivers.

Newcastle is the 20th largest city in England in terms of population size and is part of the English Core Cities Group. The city has developed rapidly since the 1960's with many sections rebuilt or redesigned.

The Tyne Bridge is one of the city's most famous landmarks. The bridge is over the Tyne Gorge and connects the north bank of Newcastle to Gateshead.

The bridge was built in 1928 by Dorman Long. Another famous bridge in the area is the much more modern Gateshead Millennium Bridge which has helped integrate the Newcastle Quayside with Gateshead.

Newcastle has a prosperous Chinatown area on Stowell Street with a fantastic Chinese arch entrance that welcomes visitors. Also located in the city is the United Kingdom's very first "biotechnology village" located near to the main Newcastle Central station.

Students can attend one of two universities in the city. Newcastle University is today regarded as one of the country's leading international universities and won the title of 'University of the Year' from the Sunday Times several years ago. The other university it the University of Northumbria at Newcastle which has equally good reviews and was voted The Times 'Best New University' in 2005.

Sport plays a big part in the history and tradition of Newcastle. The most famous team in the city is Newcastle United football club who play in the Premier League. The club play at St James' Park and are renowned for their dedicated and loyal fan base.

Transport links to Newcastle are very extensive. By air, the Newcastle International Airport serves over five million passengers every year and is one of the fastest growing regional airports in the country. By 2016 it is expected to have 10 million people using the airport each year.

By rail, Newcastle have a major railway station (Newcastle Central) on the East Coast Main Line. The station has been opened for over 150 years and operates services to most major United Kingdom destinations.

By road, the A1 road links the city to London and, in the other direction, to Edinburgh. Other smaller roads travel to Middlesbrough, Sunderland, York, Durham and Gateshead.
