Newcastle Upon
Tyne is a large city in Tyne and Wear with a population of well over
250,000 people. Newcastle is situated on the famous River Tyne, a 60
mile stretch of water that forms from the North Tyne and South Tyne
rivers.
Newcastle is the 20th largest city in England in terms of population
size and is part of the English Core Cities Group. The city has
developed rapidly since the 1960's with many sections rebuilt or
redesigned.
The Tyne Bridge is one of the city's most famous landmarks. The
bridge is over the Tyne Gorge and connects the north bank of
Newcastle to Gateshead.
The bridge was built in 1928 by Dorman Long. Another famous bridge
in the area is the much more modern Gateshead Millennium Bridge
which has helped integrate the Newcastle Quayside with Gateshead.
Newcastle has a prosperous Chinatown area on Stowell Street with a
fantastic Chinese arch entrance that welcomes visitors. Also located
in the city is the United Kingdom's very first "biotechnology
village" located near to the main Newcastle Central station.
Students can attend one of two universities in the city. Newcastle
University is today regarded as one of the country's leading
international universities and won the title of 'University of the
Year' from the Sunday Times several years ago. The other university
it the University of Northumbria at Newcastle which has equally good
reviews and was voted The Times 'Best New University' in 2005.
Sport plays a big part in the history and tradition of Newcastle.
The most famous team in the city is Newcastle United football club
who play in the Premier League. The club play at St James' Park and
are renowned for their dedicated and loyal fan base.
Transport links to Newcastle are very extensive. By air, the
Newcastle International Airport serves over five million passengers
every year and is one of the fastest growing regional airports in
the country. By 2016 it is expected to have 10 million people using
the airport each year.
By rail, Newcastle have a major railway station (Newcastle Central)
on the East Coast Main Line. The station has been opened for over
150 years and operates services to most major United Kingdom
destinations.
By road, the A1 road links the city to London and, in the other
direction, to Edinburgh. Other smaller roads travel to
Middlesbrough, Sunderland, York, Durham and Gateshead.
