Plymouth is a large city in the south west county of Devon with a population approaching a quarter of a million people. Plymouth lies at the mouth of the river Tamar and the river Plym and the city covers a large geographical area of the county.

Plymouth Sound is one of Europe's biggest natural harbours. The harbour has three main entrances from the English Channel and the river Plym and Tamar. Devonport Dockyard, located via the Tamar entrance is one the biggest naval dockyard in Europe.

This theme continues throughout the city and Plymouth has become famous for its rich maritime history. During the Second World War, the city was targeted by German planes because Plymouth was one of the country's most important navy bases. The city saw major redevelopments after the war.

Other maritime and cultural landmarks and locations in Plymouth include the Royal Dockyard, The Plymouth Barbican and the Royal Citadel. The Citadel was originally built in the middle of the 17th century and overlooks Plymouth Sound.

Students can study at the University of Plymouth which, with over 30,000 students, is fifth largest university in the United Kingdom. The university has been described as "forward thinking" by The Guardian and has a growing reputation, especially in the art, drama and architecture fields.

Plymouth has a wealth of cultural buildings, many of which are popular with tourists, including the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery that houses natural history exhibitions and fine arts.

The Plymouth Arts Centre is renowned for its collection of work by both local and British artists. Artists with work on display in the centre include Richard Deacon, Sir Terry Frost and Beryl Cook.

Although not in Plymouth, the large Cribbs Causeway shopping centre near Bristol is a popular retail destination for locals and the centre houses flagship Ikea and John Lewis retail stores.

By road, Plymouth can be accessed by the A38 dual-carriageway (there is no nearby motorways). This road connects the city to nearby Exeter with links to Cornwall and other locations in the south west. Bus services in the city operate to several suburban areas (operated by Plymouth Citybus) while other operators serve the inner city routes.
