Portsmouth is a large city in Hampshire with a population of nearly 200,000 people. Nicknamed "Pompey", Portsmouth has several surrounding areas within its boundaries that bring the population up to over 400,000 in total.

Portsmouth is famous for being the only city in the country with a large population density that London (as a whole). One of the standout landmarks is the Spinnaker Tower that was built recently at the new Gunwharf Quays development.

Portsmouth has a very busy dock that is used by many well known ship including HMS Victory. Despite the military port declining in recent years, the port still used by the Royal Navy and freight.

The larger urban area around Portsmouth includes the towns of Fareham, Havant, Waterlooville, Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent. During World War II, Portsmouth suffered severe damage to buildings and the Guildhall. Since then, the city has been rebuilt with many of the older housing areas replaced.

In addition to the well known Guildhall, Portsmouth has several other popular music venues including The Pyramids and The Wedgewood Rooms which are popular with more established bands.

The most famous sporting team in Portsmouth is Portsmouth Football Club. The team, who play at Fratton Park, have won the English Championship in 1949 and 1950. Other sporting teams include United Services Portsmouth Football Club and Portsmouth Rugby Club.

Students can attend the University of Portsmouth, a relatively new university with over 20,000 people. The university excel in biological sciences and mathematics and is proving to be a very popular choice for students.

There are three main roads that link to the cuty, the A3 London Road, he A275 and the A2030. The city has several railway stations that offer direct routes to London. These include Cohsam, Fratton, Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour.
