Sunderland is a large city in Tyne and Wear with a population of over 175,000 people. The city is part of the City of Sunderland and was historically part of County Durham. The city achieved its city status in 1992 to mark the 40th jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

Sunderland was once known as the "Greatest Shipbuilding Town in the World" and has had ships built in the city since the 14th century and reached a peak in the 1800's. The 'Torrens' ship was won of the most successful ships ever and one of Sunderland's most famous exports.

The shipyards in Sunderland have been closed since the late 1980's due to a decline in demand in recent years. Other successful industries in Sunderland have included coal mining that peaked in the 1920's. Glass has also been a staple industry for the city for many years but overseas competition has seen many of the factories close.

There are several famous breweries that have been establish in Sunderland since the late 19th century. Vaux Breweries, previously one of the largest employers in the city finally close in 1999 ending a long and prolific history.

Today, Sunderland has a good reputation in the Information Technology industry. The old shipyard areas have now been developed in to exclusive housing areas and part of the university campus. The marina development in particular has helped rejuvenate the area.

The University of Sunderland has nearly 20,000 students and was named as the "Best English University for Student Development" in a 2005 Times newspaper supplement. There are around a thousand international students attending the university from over 75 different countries.

Although there is no motorway inside the main urban area of Sunderland, the A19 connects the north and south sides of the city. By rail, Sunderland Station operates services between nearby Middlesbrough and Newcastle.

A direct train service to London King's Cross is planned for the near future that will provide direct, daily links to the capital. The main train station will also undergo major redevelopments to coincide with the new planned services.
