Wells Local Business Directory

Wells is a cathedral city in Somerset with a relatively low population of just over 10,000 residents. Set amongst the beautiful Medip Hills, Wells is famous for its spectacular Wells Cathedral that is a standout landmark in the city.

Wells got its name from three wells in the area that are all dedicated to Saint Andrew, two of these wells can be found in the Cathedral and Bishop's Palace grounds.

Originally, Wells was a Roman settlement but it came to the forefront during Saxon times when the church was built. The city was originally a borough in the early 12th century. Shortly before this, the local Bishop's seat was moved to nearby Bath.

Well's Cathedral is famous for its impressive vaulted ceilings and scissor arches underneath the central tower of the cathedral. Also in the grounds is the still used Bishop's Palace.

The cathedral is popular amongst locals and tourists and has several sections or particular interst included the east side of the nave that displays hte arched design and support for the central tower.

The west side has an impressive collection of Doulting stone statues that some regard as the most impressive collection in Europe.

At the top of one of the staircases is the Chapter House that is the place all the business of the cathedral is carried out in. The fantastic Medieval Clock (also known as the Wells Cathedral Clock) is also located in the cathedral and features a stunning 24 hour astronimical dial.

Wells is also close to several other tourist hotspots including Stonehenge and Bath. The popular West Country Carnival and Wookey Hole Caves are also popular as is the Church of St. Cuthbert and Vicar's Close (the oldest existing street in the world).

Transport links to Wells are quite good. By road, the new A39 and A371 bypass have allowed the city to return to a more market town atmosphere with popular shops, restaurants and small hotels.
