Weymouth is a medium size town in Dorset with a population of just over 50,000 people. The town is located on the south coast of England and is close to Dorchester and the Isle of Portland (connected by the A354 road).

One of Weymouth's main industries is tourism with the beach and harbour area particularly popular. In years gone by the fishing trade has had a strong presence in the town since the early 18th century.

Weymouth harbour provides a port for cross channel ferry services in addition to private boats, ships and yachts. Portland harbour is connected to Weymouth by the Chesil Beach road and is preparing to host the sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Several smaller villages make up the Weymouth area including Chickerell, Southill, Upwey, Broadwey, Wyke Regis, Preston and Radipole.

Famously, King George III regularly took his holiday in Weymouth between 1789 and 1805 and there is a statue of the King along the seafront. Also along the seafront are many Georgian terraces that have since been converted to hotels, guest houses and shops.

One of the largest and most well known landmarks in Weymouth is the Nothe Fort. The fort, and much of the town, was targeted by bombers during World War II.

The town's connections to the Second World War continue with the Bouncing Bomb being tested in the fleet and a popular museum, the Timewalk in Brewers Quay, is open to the public.

The Radipole Nature Reserve is in Weymouth and is an important habitat for fish, birds and many types of plant. There are also another nature reserve at Lodmoor which is located between the town centre and Preston.

The Pavilion Theatre is located on the seafront and hosts the yearly pantomime in addition to many other entertainment shows throughout the year. The area is subject to possible redevelopment in the future with a marina and flats one option to developers.

By rail, Weymouth is the final station on the London Waterloo to Weymouth line. The A354 road connects Weymouth to the outer suburbs of Broadwey and Upwey and then on to Dorchester which is the most common route in and out of the town.
